Ridelle
Ridelle, a Georgian revival-style bungalow nestled in the esteemed Forest Hill North area of Toronto, has witnessed the passage of time and undergone a remarkable transformation to accommodate the modern lifestyle of its new owners. Prior to a full interior demolition at Ridelle, Ouroboros worked with the homeowner to auction all remaining items in the home and then performed an interior strip.
History
Originally known as Old Saugeen Rd, the land that now comprises Ridelle Ave belonged to the renowned Sutherland Stayner family. Thomas Sutherland Stayner, a Quebec native, was a prominent figure in the late 19th century. While initially identified as a gentleman on the 1881 census, he later ventured into the financial industry, assuming roles such as the President of Bristol and West of England Company and Director of the Toronto General Trusts Company.
In its early days, Ridelle Ave was situated near the Old Beltline Forest Hill railway station, an integral part of the community's transportation network. However, with the eventual demise of the Beltline railway, the surrounding area underwent a sale for redevelopment. It was during this period that the house we know today was built.
The development of the streets surrounding Ridelle Ave began in 1903, gradually giving rise to the neighborhood that now boasts a remarkable array of homes. By 1924, the area known as "Block B" had flourished, offering a thriving community for its residents. The very first occupant of this charming abode was Gilbert Harshman, the proprietor of Vienna Knitting Mills—a renowned company located at 129 Spadina Ave, within the iconic Spadina Building, erected in 1919.
Gilbert Harshman, a notable individual, shared his life with his beloved wife, Eva Horowirz, and together they cherished their precious daughter, Pearl Harshman. Their presence and legacy contributed to the tapestry of stories woven within the walls of Ridelle Ave, leaving an enduring mark upon its foundation.
As ownership transitions to a new generation, Ridelle Ave prepares to embark on an exciting chapter of renovation. The new owners, inspired by over 60 years of cherished memories, seek to update the layout and design to align with their contemporary vision, tailored to their family's unique lifestyle. With a keen eye for functionality and modern aesthetics, they meticulously sculpt a space that blends the best of both worlds.
Ridelle Ave stands as a symbol of the past and a beacon of the future, poised to etch its indelible mark on the evolving landscape of Forest Hill North. As it opens its doors to new possibilities, the resplendent history it carries within its walls serves as a constant reminder of the lives intertwined with its remarkable journey.
