Markham
This home underwent a full interior deconstruction, with salvage efforts recovering flooring, trim, Italian glass chandeliers and sconces, 13” baseboards, 5-panel solid wood doors, wavy glass windows, and old-growth lumber. Many salvaged materials were reused in the new design.
History
The house at 331 Markham St is located in the vibrant area surrounding Bathurst and College, in what was once St. Stephen’s Ward in downtown Toronto. It is a semi-detached Edwardian Gable-style home, characteristically simpler than the area’s counterparts. Through Toronto FireMaps we are able to see a history of the lot’s development. In 1884 the lot that now contains 331 Markham St is listed as Lot 225 and between the years of 1884 and 1890 no inhabitants or structures are recorded in association with the property.
In 1894 a semi-detached home was built on Lot 225, but is registered as 333-5 Markham St. The first listed inhabitant of the property was James Moore, who is entered as the resident in Toronto’s 1903 City Directory. The current owners purchased the home from a family that had been living in the home since 1950, renovating once in the 70s.
